From an orphanage in war-ravaged Sierra Leone to the world’s most prestigious stages, a ballet dancer, Michaela DePrince, has died at the age of 29.
Michaela Deprince, influence reached people all over the world. She was a remarkable inspiration to everyone who knew her or learned about her journey. Her family provided a statement posted on her social media on Friday, “From her early life in war-torn Africa to stages and screens worldwide, she achieved her dreams and more”.
Cause of death is unknown.

Michaela DePrince, graduation from high school and the American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. She became a principal dancer at the Dance Theatre of Harlem, then moved to the Netherlands to dance with the Dutch National Ballet and joined the Boston Ballet in 2021 after returning to the U.S.
The Boston Ballet said in a statement to The Associated Press on Saturday, our condolences and support are with Michaela Mabinty DePrince’s family during this time of loss, We were privileged to know her; she was a beautiful person and a talented dancer, and she will be missed by all of us.
In her memoir, She detailed her journey from an orphanage to the stage, Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina, She also wrote a children’s book, Ballerina Dreams.
She was having skin pigmentation, so that, Michaela DePrince as framed and referred to as “the devil’s child” at the orphanage.
In 2012 in an interview with the AP, Michaela DePrince said, “I lost both my parents and spent about a year in the orphanage, where I was mistreated because of my vitiligo”, We were assigned numbers, and number 27, which was mine, was the least favored. As a result, I got the least food, clothing, and other necessities.
She recalled seeing a photo of an American ballet dancer on a magazine page, blowing against the gate of the orphanage during the civil war in Sierra Leone.
I can’t forget how completely happy she looked, DePrince told the AP, explaining she wanted to be just like her.
She remembered seeing hope in the photo, she recalled and said, I tore the page out and hid it in my underwear because I had no other place to put it.
Her family mentioned that, Her devotion helped young Black dancers feel empowered to pursue their ambitions.
Her radiant smile will be missed by us forever, and we know you’ll miss her, too, their statement said.
Mia Mabinty DePrince is her sister, recalled and stated that they slept on the same single mat in the orphanage and often entertained by performing their own ballets and musical theater performances.
After adoption, our parents fueled our ambitions, they fully supported our dreams, helping her evolve into the beautiful, strong ballerina that inspired so many. Mia DePrince wrote. From soaring on stage to traveling to third-world countries to give dance lessons to orphans and children, she was determined to turn every dream in the arts and dance into a reality.
Her family, survived by five sisters and two brothers. They asked that instead of flowers, donations be made to War Child, an organization DePrince supported as a War Child Ambassador.
This cause meant everything to her. This work was her passion, and your contributions will directly support children who have experienced the hardships of armed conflict, it was her family’s statement.
