Popovich’s Reasons for Resigning
Popovich signed a five-year extension in 2023, but in recent months, he encountered unforeseen health issues. Even though he was still a huge basketball fan he finally came to the conclusion that the physical strain of traveling practicing for games and being immersed in the fast-paced NBA world was too much Mitch Johnson.
However Popovich isn’t completely leaving. He still serves as President of Basketball Operations which enables him to continue directing the team’s course while delegating day-to-day coaching duties to his dependable assistant Mitch Johnson.

The Spurs’ Prospects
The Spurs are now entering a new era one that is still firmly anchored in Popovich’s ideas with Mitch Johnson taking over as head coach. Johnson who has spent years working closely with Popovich is supposed to maintain the coach’s dedication to player development and disciplined basketball.
The Spurs’ ability to contend for a championship again is still the most important question. Victor Wembanyama’s rise has given the team the groundwork to create something truly unique. Popovich’s front office leadership will be crucial in making sure the youthful core has the resources and guidance it needs to realize its greatest potential.
